TROPICAL NORTH QUEENSLAND

This is the only place in the world where two World Heritage Listed attractions - the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest, lie side by side. In parts of the far north, the rainforest touches the reef, reaching right down to sandy beaches from which you can snorkel the reef. The cosmopolitan city of Cairns is the gateway to these natural attractions, plus to man made triumphs like the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.

It's also a stepping stone to islands of the Great Barrier Reef as well as the grasslands of the Gulf Savannah. The Aboriginal history in the area is rich too, while on the lush Atherton Tableland, eerie volcanic lakes and a thriving dairy, peanut, coffee and maize industry, provide a different slant to Far Northern life - not to mention cooler temperatures, all year round.
